Welcome to St John the Baptist, Crowthorne
Lent begins on Ash Wednesday, which is 14th February, and lasts for 40 days.
We use the services on Ash Wednesday to prepare church members to better appreciate the death and resurrection of Christ through self-examination, repentance, prayer, fasting, and self-denial. Ashes from the burned palms of the preceding year's Palm Sunday are blessed. With these ashes, the priest marks a cross on the foreheads of worshipers, saying, "Remember that dust thou art, and unto dust thou shalt return" (Genesis 3:19 KJV).
During Lent we will be preparing for Easter. Churches Together in Crowthorne has prepared a programme of house groups and talks for Lent. Everyone is encouraged to use the time for preparation. The Church will be dressed in purple during Lent.
The mid-point of Lent is marked with Mothering Sunday and we get a respite from the rigours of Lent with Simnel Cake served after our 10am service - full of everyting naughty.
Details of all the other events can be found on the front page of this site.
