Where a warm welcome awaits you

Church Services

What to expect at St John the Baptist

A warm welcome awaits you when you come through the doors of St John’s for worship. We are a “broad church” set in the liberal catholic tradition of the Church of England. Whilst we value this tradition we are always seeking out and experimenting with new ways to give it fresh expression. There is a good age mix within the congregation and the contribution every member is valued. Coffee is served after every 10am service (with the exception of Christmas day) and there is plenty of opportunity to socialise. The church office is staffed on Wednesday mornings and you are welcome to phone or drop in for any enquiries.

Sunday Morning Creche

Is there anyone who is willing to help with the creche at the 10 am sevice. You would only be needed once or twice a term.

Getting involved in worship

Would you like to be involved in planning special worship services eg. Alternative Worship or All-Age services? Please speak to the Vicar.

Pattern of morning services

The 8am service is a Eucharist service using traditional language. On the third Sunday of each month, we use the Book of Common Prayer (BCP) version. An Order of Service is provided to assist newcomers in following the service. This service is intended for those who prefer a quiet, peaceful and prayerful atmosphere in which to worship.

The 10am service is the main service of the day. It is a Eucharist service, with hymns led normally by the organ and choir. The service is in contempory language following Common Worship. There are Creche (for 0-3 years), Sunday School (for 3-11 years) and Pathfinders (for 12 and over) which meet during the first part of the service. All the children come into Church for the Eucharist. Following the service, refreshments are served in the hall and there is an opportunity for fellowship. This service is intended for people of all ages.

On the 2nd Sunday of each month, the 10am service includes the sacrament of Baptism. We  are pleased to welcome families and friends of those being baptised.

If you are thinking of coming, please have a look at "This week at St John's" in the menu at the left hand side of the screen to check what is actually happening next Sunday, as we do have quite a few special services.

Assisting with the Sunday Services

Our small team of servers and acolytes does a wonderful job of serving at the 8.00 and the 10.00 services, and at occasional services too.

However, we are urgently in need of additional volunteers to bolster the team. Maybe you feel you don't have the time, maybe you're already committed to other rotas, but with a full team, you would only be required to serve/acolyte once a month - or even less.

So whether you are young or not so young, whether you've been a server in the past or are completely new to it, please consider helping with this important and enjoyable aspect of our worship.

Full instruction and training will be given as required. Please speak to Les after the Sunday service, or contact me on 07901 833974 or by email This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Thanks in advance,

Pattern of evening services

It is our practice to offer a variety of evening services. The pattern is varied to take account of the season and shared services with other churches.

The service is at 6pm.

Please see the attachment for the schedule of services for this quarter.
